CHANDLER - Shelves are no longer bare at the Chandler Christian Community Center food bank thanks to a city-sponsored "Christmas in July" drive that brought out some off-season holiday decorations and brought in more than two tons of food.
"We are very excited about what our community accomplished," said Assistant Public Works Director Beth Huning, who organized the drive. Raffles for gift certificates donated by nearly 40 local businesses helped raise about $2,100, she said.
The money purchased 3,000 pounds of non-perishable goods at wholesale prices from Bashas' markets, Huning said.
The city drive brought in more than 5,000 pounds of groceries, a three-month supply for the charity, said Belen DoƱan, the food bank's assistant director.
