TEMPE, Ariz. – The Valley Forward Association notified the city today that Tempe’s “Marina Water Muse” public art feature has been selected as a finalist in the “Art in Public Places” category of Valley Forward’s 24th annual Environmental Excellence Awards program.
As a finalist, Tempe will receive either an Award of Merit or a first-place Crescordia at the awards banquet, scheduled at 6 p.m. on Sept. 17 at the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale at Gainey Ranch, 7500 E. Doubletree Ranch Road, Scottsdale.
The city of Tempe's Public Art programs are intended to beautify the shared spaces of the city, celebrating the community's heritage, accomplishments and dreams. Through environmentally-friendly, high-quality art projects, the city of Tempe’s public spaces reflect a unique sense of place and make an outstanding contribution to the physical environment of the region.
The Marina Water Muse, by artist Laurie Lunquist, provides more than an aesthetically pleasing art element for the Town Lake Marina. It is an interactive circulation system that improves the water quality for the Town Lake Marina lagoon, combining functionality with environmentally-friendly design that speaks both to the community’s love of water and to its practice of controlling water in the desert.
This interactive art piece has fascinated, educated and entertained thousands of visitors to the new Marina, located at Town Lake, and recently was selected for the Public Art Network’s (PAN) prestigious Year In Review, a pre-conference session of the Americans for the Arts’ annual conference in Washington, D.C. While remaining unique, it allows people of all ages to enjoy the amenities of Town Lake with inspiring art elements.
The project was funded through the city of Tempe’s public art ordinance and recommended by the Municipal Arts Commission, a City Council-appointed advisory group that reviews all public art funding and projects.
