New Program in 'Interactive Media Design' Provides Students with Competitive Education in Evolving Career Path

PHOENIX, Nov. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to advancements and the enhancement of a designer's role within the communication technology field, The Art Institute of Phoenix has remodeled its Multimedia & Web Design program, with the inclusion of an Interactive Media Design curriculum. This program's relaunch is intended to arm students with the skills necessary to enter the ever-changing graphics and Web design industry.

Shifting from its original focus of multimedia to the practice of Web design and interactive media, the program will now prepare students to become architects -- professionals who can be artistically creative, yet knowledgeable, in the technical aspects of Web production.

"Over the past few years, we have seen a change in an interactive designer's role," said Karen A. Bryant, President of The Art Institute of Phoenix. "These days, interactive designers must know not only how to design, but also to work efficiently with a variety of tools, to communicate with and listen to customers, and to provide solutions for the Web site's users. The Art Institute of Phoenix's Interactive Media Design discipline keeps up with design definitions which evolve and reinvent themselves continuously."

In the lat 1990's, the keyword "new media" was defined as the specialty that represented Web site and CD_ROM interface design. However, in the 2002 edition of Becoming a Graphic Designer, the operative term is branded "interactivity." The design of Web sites seems so simple that anyone can do it, but outstanding Web sites also require graphic design skills, an understanding of navigation and information architecture, and the grasp of technical limitations.

Students studying Interactive Media Design will learn all of these concepts as they prepare for a career in the Web industry. Graduates will be "user-centered designers" -- designers who think like a user and aim to please the user first -- and will be prepared for entry-level positions such as Web designer, content developer, and Web producer. The curriculum will offer students classes in graphic and Web design, Photoshop and other layout programs, "back end" Web page development, information design, marketing, and business strategies.
