Lunar Eclipse in October (Wednesday, October 27, 2004)

East Valley News - News for the East Valley of Phoenix Arizona

The Full Moon shrinks into a Crescent Moon and then turns into a dark reddish blur in the sky just after sunset on the evening of Wednesday, October 27th. Later – after 10 p.m. – the Moon again appears Full!

These unusual events mark the last Total Eclipse of the Moon visible from the U.S.A. until 2007. Arizonans will see the eclipse start at 6:16 p.m. (about 40 minutes after sunset) and we can watch the eclipse end just before 10 p.m. Mountain Standard Time (MST). Persons living east of Arizona will see the entire eclipse occur higher in the sky, while persons on the West Coast will see the Moon rise already partially in eclipse.

Construction to cause street closures in Tempe

Construction to cause street closures in Tempe

TEMPE, Ariz. - Two construction projects will close portions of Tempe
streets and freeways this weekend.

Loop 101 southbound in Tempe will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m.
Monday between Rio Salado Parkway and the US 60. The reason for this closure
is to allow ADOT's contractor to install rubberized asphalt. All traffic
will be detoured to Price Road. All cross streets will remain open.

The intersection at Priest Drive and Southern Avenue will be closed for
three weekends in October. All closures will be from 9 p.m. Friday to 5
a.m. Monday. The closures will take place as follows:

* Oct. 15 to Oct. 18
* Oct. 22 to Oct. 25
* Oct. 29 to Nov. 1

Southern Avenue traffic will be detoured at 48th Street and Mill Avenue.
Priest Drive traffic will be detoured at Broadway and Baseline roads. Local
access will be maintained to all businesses and residential streets.
Pedestrian, buses and emergency services will be allowed through the
intersection with police assistance.

The reason for these closures is to allow the City's contractor to install
a new sewer diversion structure in the middle of the intersection

Tempe City Council increases Landscape Rebates

Tempe City Council increases Landscape Rebates

TEMPE, Ariz. - Tempe City Council approved an increase in the Landscape
Rebate Program proposed by the Water Utilities Department on Sept. 30, 2004.
The Landscape Rebate Program has increased its payout to $250 for the front
yard and $250 for the backyard, a total of $500 if both are converted from
grass to desert landscaping.

Before, residents were only eligible for a one time rebate of $100 to
convert a front or back yard of grass to desert landscaping. The City
Council's approval came in the midst of continuing drought conditions in
Arizona, and the program offers residents a greater incentive to convert
their landscapes to a low water use Xeriscape design.

For information and rebate forms, contact the City Water Conservation
Program at 480/350-2668.
