INVESTMENT CONTINUES IN DOWNTOWN SCOTTSDALE
Downtown Scottsdale is buzzing with activity - including roughly $1.4 billion in public and private investment in development projects. Here's an update on some of the major projects under construction or planned:
** Downtown parking garages: Two public garages, with a combined 365 parking spaces, are tentatively scheduled to open next month. Meanwhile, about 200 parking spaces are now available for public use at the financial center on the northwest corner of Scottsdale and Indian School roads. Parking there is available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekends. Another parking option is at the Scottsdale HealthCare surface lot and garage at Brown Avenue and Second Street. These spots are available weekdays after 4:30 p.m. and all day on weekends.
** The Optima Camelview site plan has been approved by the City Council. The project will provide 750 residential units and 38,000 square feet of retail space on a 13.5-acre site north of Scottsdale Fashion Square.
** Valley Ho resort: Demolition is complete and the proposed project is in final plan review. The project involves the rehabilitation of historic buildings and a new two-story hotel wing for a total of 194 boutique hotel rooms. Also planned are 36 condominium units, along with a ballroom, meeting rooms, integrated health club and spa, an interior restaurant and a freestanding "Trader Vics" Restaurant. Scheduled to reopen in December 2005.
** Condominium projects. The following number of residential units are either planned or under construction: Scottsdale Waterfront, 366 units; Main Street Residences, 162 units; Main Street Plaza, 250 units; Third Avenue Lofts, 88 units; Portales residential, 126 units; X Lofts, 88 units.
** Scottsdale Healthcare additions. Scottsdale Healthcare has opened a new trauma center, medical offices and parking facilities downtown for a total investment of nearly $90 million.
** W Hotel. Construction is scheduled to begin June 2005, with the opening planned in August 2007. The hotel, one block east of Scottsdale Road on Camelback Road, will feature 225 rooms, 25 condominiums, two bars, a restaurant and retail space.
