Bus stops get temporary makeovers

Bus stops get temporary makeovers

TEMPE, Ariz. - Bus travelers at selected transit locations will be greeted
by an array of temporary artwork thanks to a city public art project being
installed at seven locations this month.

The Artist-Adorned Transit Stops feature artistic, playful designs that
encourage the use of mass transit and showcase the artwork of five local and
national artists. The temporary art features will be installed throughout
July and will be place from one week to six months.

About the projects

Title: "Wind Powered One Way Oil Derrick"
Location: Northwest corner of University and Priest drives
Artist: Jose Benavides, Chandler
This project features two whirligigs made of recycled materials from the
city's sign shop and uses the wind as a renewable power source to make
references that bus riding is one way to save oil.

Title: "Transition Soundings"
Location: Northwest corner of Broadway Road and Priest Drive
Artist: David Birchfield, Gilbert
This interactive piece incorporates sounds that are triggered by
individuals' movements as they await the bus. The piece encourages riders to
interact with both the work and one another and inspires reflection upon the
interconnectedness of our communities, the role of transit in uniting us,
the role of technology in our society, the sonic world around us and the
importance of environmental sensitivity.

Title: "Cousins"
Locations: Southeast corner of Priest Drive and Broadway Road and southeast
corner of University Drive and 52nd St.
Artist: Tom Block, Silver Springs, Md.
The goal of this project (which features six art and text pieces at each
location) is to use art to move the ideas of peace, understanding and beauty
that underpin the beliefs of great thinkers, such as Ghandi, the Sufis,
Nelson Mandela and Lao Tzu, thus celebrating the beauty of the world's
diverse traditions. Additionally, it captures the "sameness" among all
people, thereby basing the project on a mutual respect for all.

Title: "We'll manage"
Location: Southside of Broadway Road and 55th Street/Frontage Road
Artist: Claudia Sbrissa, New York, N.Y.
A series of six Plexiglas panels, decorated with images made of colored
vinyl celebrate aspects of the city, including Tempe's history, its present
condition and its future plans. The finished artwork, reminiscent of
contemporary stained glass windows, connotes the vibrancy of the city and
its people.

Title: "Untitled"
Locations: Southeast corner of University and Priest drives and northeast
corner of Broadway Road and Priest Drive
Artist: Joel Sherman, Isla Vista, Calif.
Excerpts from poet and writer Thomas Meyer's translation of the Tao Te Ching
(also translated as the Dao De Jing) are stenciled in mud onto two standard
city transit shelters. The text deals with many principles, including
temporality, force, flexibility and resistance. These issues are relevant to
the nation, at large, and also in the context of the climate and
geographical character of Tempe.
