State in top 10 for new jobs

65K in '04: State in top 10 for new jobs
But the December number, 5,700, is about one-third of the 10-year average for the month.
JONATHAN J. HIGUERA
The Arizona Republic
Job creation around the state ended on a sour note in December, with only 5,700 new jobs added, or about one-third of the 10-year average for December.
However, the figures released yesterday from the state Department of Economic Security also showed Arizona gained nearly 65,000 jobs during the year, for a 2.8 percent increase.
"A lot of states are not growing as fast as we are," state economist Don Wehbey said. "Many industries set new records for job levels. So there's been continued progress."
Year over year, construction, education and health services drove the state's job growth, accounting for more than 50 percent of the new jobs.
Manufacturing finished the year with 1,000 fewer jobs than the year before, and the information sector, which includes telecommunications, lost 3,700 jobs.
While not up to growth rates achieved in the boom years of the 1990s, the state's 2.8 percent overall growth does put the state among the top 10 in the nation for job creation in 2004.

PHOENIX -- Arizona's jobless rate dropped sharply in December -- but not because more people are working.
In fact, just the reverse is true: The number of Arizonans actually employed dropped by about 5,000 between November and December. But the number of people looking for work slid more -- by close to 13,800.
The result was a statewide seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 4.2 percent. That's down three-tenths of a point from the prior month, and eight-tenths from a year earlier.

Arizona's 2004 gains insufficient
Jonathan J. Higuera
The Arizona Republic
Jan. 21, 2005 12:00 AM
The year 2004 may go down as a turning point for the Arizona economy following a couple of underperforming years, but for many, it will be remembered for its tepid job growth.
From December 2003 through December 2004, the state created 65,000 jobs, placing it among the nation's job-creation leaders, the state Department of Economic Security reported Thursday. But for a state that was adding more than 100,000 jobs a year in the late 1990s and still in need of knowledge-industry jobs, last year's figure simply was insufficient.

Arizona among top 10 states for job growth
PHOENIX Arizona gained nearly 65-thousand jobs during the year, putting us amoung the top ten states in the nation for job creation in 2004.
According to figures released from the state Department of Economic Security, that's a 2-point-8 percent increase.
Construction, education and health services have driven the state's job growth, accounting for more than 50 percent of the new jobs here.
Earlier this month, the federal government reported that the nation added 2-point-2 (m) million jobs last year -- an increase of 1-point-7 percent.

Beware Of Phone Scam From Imposters Claiming To Represent Publishers Clearing House
Updated: September 15, 2004
If you are asked to pay to claim a prize -- do not send any money --
you have not heard from the real Publishers Clearing House.
Port Washington, N.Y, September 2004 - Port Washington New York - The Consumer Affairs Division of Publishers Clearing House would like to warn consumers about an ongoing phone scam from con artists fraudulently and illegally representing that they are calling from or representing Publishers Clearing House.
PCH has been receiving reports of calls being made to consumers around the country from individuals claiming to work for a law firm representing Publishers Clearing House. The callers fraudulently represent that the consumer is a winner in the famous PCH sweepstakes and request that some form of payment for “taxes,” “custom fees,” “border security” or other bogus reason be made for the prize to be collected. Consumers are often told that the prize is coming from Canada where, they are told, the original prize winner was disqualified. Consumers are requested to transfer money by Western Union, Moneygram or other wire delivery service to locations purported to be in Canada, Israel and Romania. To lend legitimacy to the pitch, phone numbers are often provided for the consumer to call back and are answered by recorded greetings claiming to be the real Publishers Clearing House or a law firm representing the company. PCH continues to share information on these scams with law enforcement officials in the United States and Canada in the hope that the operators can be identified and stopped.
PUBLISHERS CLEARING HOUSE CONSUMER AFFAIRS ALERT
“If you are contacted by anyone claiming to represent Publishers Clearing House and they request payment of any amount to collect a prize do not send any money” said Christopher L. Irving the Senior Director of Consumer Affairs for Publishers Clearing House. “You have not heard from the real Publishers Clearing House” Irving continued. “We want you to know that you never have to pay any amount to claim a prize with the real PCH. At Publishers Clearing House, the winning is always free.”
If consumers believe a call or letter received did not come from the real Publishers Clearing House they should contact Publishers Clearing House at once by calling the PCH Customer Service line at 1-800-645-9242. Consumers are also advised to refer any reports of such calls to the National Consumer League’s National Fraud Hotline at 1(800) 876-7060. Publishers Clearing House, based in Port Washington New York has awarded over $191 million in major prizes since 1967. Consumers who win prizes of $10,000 or more are notified in person by the famous PCH Prize Patrol.

New service lets Mesa utility customers pay online
New service lets Mesa utility customers pay online
Mesa utility customers can stop writing checks, buying stamps and
waiting in line to pay their utility bills. The new “My Utility Account”
at www.cityofmesa.org gives customers a variety of fast and convenient
payment options online.
City utility customers now can logon and pay their bill with a credit
card or bank draft virtually 24 hours a day. They also can use a credit
card or bank draft to pay automatically each billing period.
In addition, “My Utility Account” helps customers keep track of their
bills. Residents can see how much electricity, gas or water they are
using, and view their current utility bill or past bills online. “My
Utility Account” is free, and customers can get started by registering at
www.cityofmesa.org.
Mesa Channel 11 currently is airing a video with step-by-step
instructions on how to use “My Utility Account,” and hundreds of customers
have tried the new service since its Jan. 3 launch.
“My Utility Account” is the latest addition to the roll out of the
City’s Customer Information System (CIS). The implementation of the CIS
represents a new approach to improve the quality of Mesa’s utility customer
service. The system provides better communication between departments and
creates additional opportunities for more efficient business procedures.
CIS offers a customer-care solution that supports all aspects of the
customer-service process, such as customer contact, billing, marketing,
credit services, meter reading, equipment inventory and service orders for
City services. It has given the City the ability to expand products and
services in a competitive customer-care environment.
The CIS allows Mesa’s Customer Service, Utilities, Building Safety
and Solid Waste divisions to work from the same database to provide
seamless service. It also enhances the City’s ability to provide one-call
customer service, quick installation of new service and prompt follow-up on
customer problems.
Mesa currently provides utility service to more than 150,000
customers.

Free wireless Internet available in Downtown Tempe

Arizona State University in partnership with the City of Tempe is providing the public with free wireless Internet access for mobile computer users in downtown Tempe, the first city in Arizona to provide this service.
Downtown Tempe free wireless Internet is made possible through the cooperative efforts of the City of Tempe and ASU Information Technology Departments. This collaboration would not have been possible without the strong partnership between ASU and the City of Tempe. Tempe City Council, Mayor Hugh Hallman and ASU President, Dr. Michael Crow will dedicate the wireless network at a ceremony on Jan. 11.
WHAT: City of Tempe and Arizona State University will dedicate the free wireless Internet service WHEN: 8 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005 WHERE: Tempe Beach Park, Rio Salado Parkway and Mill Avenue (follow Rio Salado Parkway, west of Mill Avenue, it winds around to the parking lot)
"Wireless access downtown is another exciting example that Tempe really is the Smart Place to Be," Hallman said. "This will further invigorate our downtown as we attract more full-time residents and highly skilled employees."
Outdoor wireless Internet access was made available for mobile computer users in many locations along Mill Avenue and adjoining side streets. This access will allow laptop users to connect to the Internet for web browsing at many popular outdoor venues and dining establishments in the downtown area, including Tempe Beach Park
"Tempe has all the ingredients to make it our nation's premier college town," said Milton Glick, Executive Vice President and Provost, Arizona State University. "Joining together to create a wireless downtown is one more element of creating a seamless interface between downtown and ASU and reinforcing Tempe and ASU as a destination point for the creative class."
Mobile computer users wanting to connect to the network will need a laptop computer with an 802.11B wireless card.
Free wireless in the Downtown is just the first phase of the vision for wireless Internet access in Tempe. The City of Tempe will be issuing a Request for Proposals (RFP) in January 2005 soliciting a Service Provider to offer wireless Internet service throughout all of Tempe. The RFP will call for a Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISP) to design and implement a city-wide "for fee" network. A copy of the RFP will be available for download at http://www.Tempe.Gov/purchase/bids/ .
Information about the public wireless service in downtown Tempe, including a full description of the services offered, instructions for use and maps showing coverage areas is available at www.tempe.gov/downtownwireless or at www.asu.edu/tempewireless.
