SCHOOL STARTS SOON - CITY HAS AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS AVAILABLE
Scottsdale operates after-school programs at several park and school sites in the community. These programs offer opportunities for youth to participate in recreation programs that provide a fun and safe atmosphere for children in the first through sixth grades.
Information on the after-school programs is available in the Recreation Classes and Activities Brochure now available at city libraries, parks and community centers.

CITY EMPLOYEES WIN STATE AWARDS AT "ROAD-E-O" COMPETITION
Scottsdale Equipment Operator Rod Flores is the top solid waste "roll-off" operator in the state. Flores recently took first place in the competition during the SWANA Truck Road-e-o held in Flagstaff. Solid waste equipment operators from across the state competed in a variety of categories to determine who was the best of the best.
Flores now moves to the national competition held this October in North Carolina.
City commercial front loader operator Jesse Trevino brought home a second place trophy at the Road-e-o.

Arizona Museum for Youth receives grant

The Arizona Museum for Youth has received a $7,000 grant from the Arizona
Office of Tourism to support a year-long, online marketing campaign. The
campaign seeks to increase the museum's profile within the Valley and State
as well as to increase overall museum attendance.

The Arizona Museum for Youth is located at 35 N. Robson St. Jeepers

Bus stops get temporary makeovers

Bus stops get temporary makeovers

TEMPE, Ariz. - Bus travelers at selected transit locations will be greeted
by an array of temporary artwork thanks to a city public art project being
installed at seven locations this month.

The Artist-Adorned Transit Stops feature artistic, playful designs that
encourage the use of mass transit and showcase the artwork of five local and
national artists. The temporary art features will be installed throughout
July and will be place from one week to six months.

About the projects

Title: "Wind Powered One Way Oil Derrick"
Location: Northwest corner of University and Priest drives
Artist: Jose Benavides, Chandler
This project features two whirligigs made of recycled materials from the
city's sign shop and uses the wind as a renewable power source to make
references that bus riding is one way to save oil.

Title: "Transition Soundings"
Location: Northwest corner of Broadway Road and Priest Drive
Artist: David Birchfield, Gilbert
This interactive piece incorporates sounds that are triggered by
individuals' movements as they await the bus. The piece encourages riders to
interact with both the work and one another and inspires reflection upon the
interconnectedness of our communities, the role of transit in uniting us,
the role of technology in our society, the sonic world around us and the
importance of environmental sensitivity.

Title: "Cousins"
Locations: Southeast corner of Priest Drive and Broadway Road and southeast
corner of University Drive and 52nd St.
Artist: Tom Block, Silver Springs, Md.
The goal of this project (which features six art and text pieces at each
location) is to use art to move the ideas of peace, understanding and beauty
that underpin the beliefs of great thinkers, such as Ghandi, the Sufis,
Nelson Mandela and Lao Tzu, thus celebrating the beauty of the world's
diverse traditions. Additionally, it captures the "sameness" among all
people, thereby basing the project on a mutual respect for all.

Title: "We'll manage"
Location: Southside of Broadway Road and 55th Street/Frontage Road
Artist: Claudia Sbrissa, New York, N.Y.
A series of six Plexiglas panels, decorated with images made of colored
vinyl celebrate aspects of the city, including Tempe's history, its present
condition and its future plans. The finished artwork, reminiscent of
contemporary stained glass windows, connotes the vibrancy of the city and
its people.

Title: "Untitled"
Locations: Southeast corner of University and Priest drives and northeast
corner of Broadway Road and Priest Drive
Artist: Joel Sherman, Isla Vista, Calif.
Excerpts from poet and writer Thomas Meyer's translation of the Tao Te Ching
(also translated as the Dao De Jing) are stenciled in mud onto two standard
city transit shelters. The text deals with many principles, including
temporality, force, flexibility and resistance. These issues are relevant to
the nation, at large, and also in the context of the climate and
geographical character of Tempe.

American Retirement Corporation Acquires Phoenix Community

American Retirement Corporation (NYSE: ACR), a leading national provider of senior housing and care, today announced that it has completed its previously announced $23.4 million purchase from Maybrook Realty of a senior living community located in Phoenix, Arizona, which the Company had previously leased. The community includes 128 skilled nursing beds, 44 assisted living units and subleased space to a home health agency. The community is adjacent to Freedom Plaza Peoria, a 352-unit entrance-fee independent living community also operated by the Company.


The purchase includes excess land, a portion of which will accommodate an expansion currently in process of 21 assisted living units and the development of a state-of-the-art Alzheimer's unit with 20 beds. The $18.7 million in debt financing for the purchase and expansion was provided by Bank of America with an initial blended interest rate of 6.3%. The Company expects that the transaction will be accretive to GAAP income by approximately $500,000 and to cash flow by approximately $1.1 million before principal amortization.
