City of Phoenix Earns CIO Magazine’s Top Award

City of Phoenix Earns CIO Magazine’s Top Award
August 29 , 2005 by Kathleen Gorden

Phoenix was recognized for its leadership in developing the Phoenix Regional Wireless Network, a wide-area digital radio network which will be used primarily by public safety personnel. The system allows participating agencies to communicate during emergency situations, something that took on even more significance following the events of Sept. 11.

“The Bold 100 honorees stand out because they have dared to take on risk for the chance of reward in an extremely conservative business climate,” says Abbie Lundberg, editor-in-chief, CIO magazine. “The executives leading these organizations are smart, inventive and determined - I offer them my warmest congratulations.”

“Phoenix has always been willing to take on the tough projects,” said Mayor Phil Gordon. “Public safety is our number one priority and we’re honored to be recognized for our efforts with the Phoenix Regional Wireless Network.”

The new radio network is designed to improve communication between emergency personnel both within the city of Phoenix as well as among 17 surrounding cities and towns. The network spans the Valley from Buckeye to Apache Junction and from Daisy Mountain to Ahwatukee.

During critical incidents, police officers, firefighters and other emergency personnel will be able to use the system to talk to one another and coordinate their response. The network has become a model for how other cities around the country will address the need for interagency communications.

So far Phoenix police and four other municipal departments are using the system. The radio communications systems used by the cities of Mesa, Apache Junction and Gilbert also are fully integrated with the Phoenix system.

“Even before Sept. 11, we recognized the importance of creating this type of regional communication system,” said Deputy City Manager Andrea Tevlin. “In addition to taking the lead on the project, we committed one-third of our IT budget to this effort.”

“Receiving an award like this is quite an honor. It is a real testament to the numerous city employees whose expertise and dedication made it possible,” said Acting Chief Information Officer Kristine Sigfridson. “Assuming risk is always part of implementing technology, being able to mitigate that risk is where real innovation occurs.”

The 2005 CIO 100 award is presented by CIO magazine. For more information, visit www.cio.com.

TEMPE, Ariz. - Tempe Mayor Hugh Hallman and the Tempe City Council
welcome the public to the next taping of Let's Talk Tempe, for a

the funds support many vitally important services in Tempe.

The mayor and council's guests will be: Jerry Hart, City of Tempe
Financial Services Manager; and Heidi Pahl, 2005 Census Survey
Coordinator with the Maricopa Association of Governments. The forum will
take place at 7:30 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 30, at the Pyle Adult Recreation
Center, 655 E. Southern Avenue. Bagels, coffee and juice will be served
beginning at 7 a.m.

Audience members are welcome to stay for about 10 minutes following the
taping, to be part of the "cast" of a public service announcement about
the census that will air on Tempe 11. Mayor Hallman will be taping the
TV commercial and citizens are welcome to be part of the supporting
cast. Let's Talk Tempe is taped monthly in front of an audience of

Sand bag locations in Mesa

Sand bag locations in Mesa

We are anticipating more storms this week, please be prepared to protect your homes from being flooded.

Mesa Fire Department has sand available. Please bring your own shovel, we currently have bags available at the stations listed below. It is recommended to fill the bags one-half to two-thirds full. The bag, when filled, should lie fairly flat. Over-filled bags are firm and do not nestle into one another; tight bags make for a leaky sandbag wall.

Sand is located at five fire stations and two city sites:

- Station 204, 1426 S. Extension
- Station 205, 730 S. Greenfield
- Station 208, 4530 E. McKellips

- Station 212, 2430 S. Ellsworth
- 300 E. 6th Street (west side)
- 6935 E. Decatur (north west parking lot)

Nominations Being Accepted for 2005 Governor's Celebration of Innovation Awards

Nominations Being Accepted for 2005 Governor's Celebration of Innovation Awards

Celebrating those who emerge as the pacesetters for Arizona's rapidly growing technology industry; Nominations due by Friday, August 26, 2005

The Arizona Technology Council, High Technology Industry Cluster, Arizona Department of Commerce and the Southern Arizona Tech Council announce the call for nomination for this year's Governor's Celebration of Innovation Awards. The awards recognize the many contributions of professionals, companies and academia who, through technological innovation, show leadership in and passion for the state's technology community. The event delivers an insider look at emerging to established companies, carefully chosen by a selection panel to showcase innovation and growth potential.

Seven prestigious awards are available to those projects, businesses, organizations, educational programs, or individuals who exemplify outstanding achievements in technological innovation. Award recipients are selected by an independent judging committee, drawn from the fields of science, technology, venture capital and higher education.

"The Governor's Celebration of Innovation is a wonderful event and demonstrates the technology community in Arizona is growing rapidly. This event gives everyone a chance to pause and recognize all of the truly innovative local companies and their accomplishments. It was quite an honor to win an award last year considering the caliber of competition and previous winners. What made the evening even more special was that we were able to bring the whole company and our key advisors to celebrate with us. This Tech Council event really kicked off explosive growth for our company. The Innovator of the Year award is special to us since it does not honor just one invention, but rather KMI's team, vision and products as a whole," said Ed Koeneman, founder and COO, Kinetic Muscles Inc., Winner: 2004 Innovator of the Year -- Start-Up Company.

This year, presentation of the awards will take place on Tuesday, November 15, 2005, at an exciting dinner to be held at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa.

To obtain nomination information, a list of past winners, and more about the awards and upcoming event, visit the official Governor's Celebration of Innovation Web site at www.celebration-of-innovation.com or contact the Arizona Technology Council office at 602-343-8324, ext. 104. Peg Davis Wins CIO Ones to Watch Award

Peg Davis Wins CIO Ones to Watch Award

Peg Davis, deputy chief information officer in the city’s Information Technology Department, has been selected as one of the 2005 CIO Ones to Watch. The award, sponsored by CIO magazine, recognizes the rising stars of information technology as tomorrow’s technology leaders.

Faced with four straight years of budget cuts, Davis and her telecom services staff constantly brainstorm creative ways to do more with less. Her tough approach to contracts, warranties and service-level agreements, and its regular audits, are saving the city more than $1 million annually while freeing up funds for new initiatives. Under Davis' empowering leadership, the telecom team delivers customer-focused and cost-effective services.

“Peg is an invaluable asset to the city’s information technology team. Her leadership and innovation have improved the value and level of our customer service. She truly is a rising star in this organization,” said Acting Chief Information Officer Kristine Sigfridson.

Davis, 45, began her career with the city of Phoenix in 1999 as a deputy chief information officer. She oversees the enterprise telecommunication services and network infrastructure section. For more information about the 2005 Ones to Watch Award, visit www.cio.com/archive/071505/otw_intro.html.
