City of Phoenix Receives National Recycling Leadership Award
January 09 , 2006 by Kathleen Gorden

The city of Phoenix will receive the 2005 National Community Recycling Leadership Award from the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC), a nonprofit public service organization dedicated to recycling rechargeable batteries and cell phones.

RBRC will present the award to Councilman Claude Mattox at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13, at Phoenix City Hall, 200 W. Washington St., assembly room A.

The Office of Environmental Programs in conjunction with other city departments is being recognized for maintaining an efficient rechargeable battery collection program. This effort has resulted in the collection of more than 8,200 pounds of rechargeable batteries and cell phones since 2003.

“The battery recycling program is a great partnership between the city of Phoenix and RBRC,” said Lupe Buys, an environmental quality specialist with the city. “We use city facilities and staff to collect unwanted or unusable rechargeable batteries, while RBRC pays for the processing cost to recycle them. This program is of great benefit to the community and the environment.”

The Office of Environmental Programs assists in the development of city environmental policies and regulations, and provides technical and regulatory guidance to city departments.

City of Mesa offers budget payment and select due date services

City of Mesa residential utility customers now have two new service options
to select from effective as of Jan. 3.

Budget payment plan

Under the budget payment plan, customers can pay a predetermined amount
each billing period based on a 12-month utility bill average. The
difference between actual billed usage and budget payments made will be
settled once each year.

The following budget payment plans will be offered dependent on services
used:

- Customers with multiple service types (any combination of electric,
water, gas, sewer, solid waste, irrigation) or electric service only, can
sign up for the budget payment plan Nov. 1 through Jan. 31. The annual
settlement period for this plan will be during the month of October.

- Customers with gas service only, can sign up for the budget payment plan
starting June 1 through Aug. 31. The annual settlement period for this
plan will be during the month of May.

With either plan, the City of Mesa periodically will review accounts and
make adjustments as needed to payment amounts to reflect significant,
unexpected changes in usage.

Select due date

City of Mesa utility customers also can choose a payment due date that fits
their needs by using the select due date service option (available dates
may vary). Utility bills will be mailed approximately 21 days before the
new due date selected.

Customers must have a zero balance to enroll in either service option.
Monthly payments also must be received by the bill due date to avoid late
fees. Delinquency will result in removal from these new service offerings.
The budget payment plan can be combined with both the select due date and
SurePay auto pay plan.

To enroll for these free services, call the City of Mesa Customer Call
Center at (480) 644-2221.

Wireless Mesh Network from Wildfire Broadband Wireless Communications and BelAir Networks Will Serve Scottsdale, Arizona's Booming Downtown; New High Speed Internet Service for Business and Residents: Free Game Hour for Kids

KANATA, Ontario Jan. 3, 2006--The city of Scottsdale, Arizona is a dynamic, fast-growing city located in the heart of the beautiful Sonoran Desert. With an eye on the future, Wildfire Broadband Wireless Communications is deploying a powerful wireless network in the downtown area to support new business and recreational opportunities for retail establishments, carriers, residents and visitors. Wildfire chose BelAir Network's wide-area wireless broadband solution for its mesh network deployment which will offer high speed Internet access and other wireless services. Wildfire will also provide ubiquitous mobility to area carriers interested in connecting their subscribers through the Scottsdale network.

Wildfire Broadband Wireless Communications, a leading provider of wireless solutions to business, K-12, university campuses, residential communities, and multi-family dwelling units, will begin the first phase of the deployment by providing wireless access to City Hall and the downtown business district. The network will offer access speeds of up to 6Mbps downstream and 2Mbps upstream. Since 2004, BelAir's industry-leading mesh products have been deployed in 100 networks worldwide.

"We are pleased that Wildfire is bringing its wireless network to Scottsdale and investing in our revitalized downtown," Mayor Mary Manross said. "There is a growing demand for communications services in our city."

"We are very proud and excited to work with the City of Scottsdale to implement this wireless network which was designed to take advantage of the new wireless technologies on the immediate horizon," stated Randy Carrero, president and chief executive officer, Wildfire Broadband Wireless Communications. "The BelAir solution is the most technologically advanced and the only solution available today which can provide the performance, capacity and Quality of Service needed to support the services that forward-thinking cities like Scottsdale will need for their citizens and businesses today and in the future."

Scottsdale, Arizona is in the midst of a tremendous program to revitalize the downtown business district with significant new residential, office and retail projects. With over $1 billion in investment planned, Wildfire found it an optimal time to bring a wireless network to the city to help support its future communications needs.

Wireless high-speed Internet access is just one of many interesting applications being planned for Scottsdale. For example, Wildfire is working with a major software company to offer a children's game hour where they can play games for free on the Scottsdale network.

The BelAir solution is the only carrier-grade offering able to support multiple carrier networks and services over a single mesh network with the industry's highest capacity and performance.

The new network will make high-speed broadband access available to subscribers cost-effectively with hourly, daily, monthly and annual plans. Additionally, higher levels of speed will be available for businesses.

"Wi-Fi mesh technology offers new service and revenue opportunities for cities," stated Phil Belanger, vice president of marketing, BelAir Networks. "BelAir offers an integrated, scaleable and cost-effective way for cities to expand their core services and develop new applications for businesses and residents using Wi-Fi."
