Tempe to Participate in Regional Unity Walk





All are invited to participate as hundreds from across the Valley join
together Saturday, February 4 for a regional show of solidarity and
endorsement of diversity.

The Regional Unity Walk will feature walkers from Phoenix, Tempe and
Scottsdale along with Gilbert, Chandler, and Queen Creek. The
participants will converge at Steele Indian School Park in Phoenix.

About 2,000 walkers are expected. Unity walkers will assemble at 9 a.m.
at two staging areas: Park Central Mall, Central Avenue and Earl Street
(north of Thomas Road) and Monterey Park located at 3rd Street and
Sheridan (south of Virginia). Participants from Tempe, Chandler and
Gilbert will assemble at Monterey Park while those from Phoenix,
Scottsdale, and Queen Creek will meet at Park Central Mall.



The Monterey group will start at 9:30 a.m. while the Park Central
participants will start at 9:40 a.m. Both groups will merge at 3rd
Street and Earl and walk together to Steele Indian School Park where
they will be greeted by performers at the APS Black Heritage Festival,
to be held at the Park, immediately following the Unity Walk.

Major sponsors of the Walk include APS, La Voz Newspaper. Other
sponsors are Perini Building Company, Fry's Food Stores, Multicultural
Yellow Pages, Arizona Back Pages, Farmer's Insurance and Bashas.

Celebration at the festival includes live music, cultural performances,
food, a children's village and international vendors.

Both events are free.

City of Phoenix Receives National Recycling Leadership Award

The city of Phoenix will receive the 2005 National Community Recycling Leadership Award from the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC), a nonprofit public service organization dedicated to recycling rechargeable batteries and cell phones.

RBRC will present the award to Councilman Claude Mattox at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13, at Phoenix City Hall, 200 W. Washington St., assembly room A.

The Office of Environmental Programs in conjunction with other city departments is being recognized for maintaining an efficient rechargeable battery collection program. This effort has resulted in the collection of more than 8,200 pounds of rechargeable batteries and cell phones since 2003.

“The battery recycling program is a great partnership between the city of Phoenix and RBRC,” said Lupe Buys, an environmental quality specialist with the city. “We use city facilities and staff to collect unwanted or unusable rechargeable batteries, while RBRC pays for the processing cost to recycle them. This program is of great benefit to the community and the environment.”

The Office of Environmental Programs assists in the development of city environmental policies and regulations, and provides technical and regulatory guidance to city departments.

City of Mesa offers budget payment and select due date services

City of Mesa residential utility customers now have two new service options
to select from effective as of Jan. 3.


Budget payment plan

Under the budget payment plan, customers can pay a predetermined amount
each billing period based on a 12-month utility bill average. The
difference between actual billed usage and budget payments made will be
settled once each year.

The following budget payment plans will be offered dependent on services
used:

- Customers with multiple service types (any combination of electric,
water, gas, sewer, solid waste, irrigation) or electric service only, can
sign up for the budget payment plan Nov. 1 through Jan. 31. The annual
settlement period for this plan will be during the month of October.

- Customers with gas service only, can sign up for the budget payment plan
starting June 1 through Aug. 31. The annual settlement period for this
plan will be during the month of May.

With either plan, the City of Mesa periodically will review accounts and
make adjustments as needed to payment amounts to reflect significant,
unexpected changes in usage.


Select due date

City of Mesa utility customers also can choose a payment due date that fits
their needs by using the select due date service option (available dates
may vary). Utility bills will be mailed approximately 21 days before the
new due date selected.


Customers must have a zero balance to enroll in either service option.
Monthly payments also must be received by the bill due date to avoid late
fees. Delinquency will result in removal from these new service offerings.
The budget payment plan can be combined with both the select due date and
SurePay auto pay plan.

Junior rowing program hits the water January 18



TEMPE, Ariz. - Teens can row their way to fitness and fun on Tempe Town
Lake this winter and spring, now that the city is gearing up for its
Winter Junior Rowing program.



Students will learn the basics of rowing and have a chance to attend
races throughout the Southwest. Classes also provide greater
opportunities for collegiate scholarships. Classes will be Mondays,
Wednesdays and Fridays, from 4-6 p.m., January 18 through April 26. The
class fee for novice rowers is $125.

Students learn about city government



TEMPE, Ariz. - Students will wield the gavel at a mock City Council
meeting and shadow city officials during City of Tempe Student
Government Day on Jan. 11, 2006.



Sophomores, juniors and seniors from Corona del Sol, Tempe, Marcos de
Niza, McClintock, and Compadre high schools are participating in this
annual event hosted by the Mayor's Youth Advisory Commission (MYAC). The
program teaches leadership and the importance of community involvement.
Students are given the unique opportunity to experience city government
from the inside.



Following welcoming remarks from MYAC chairperson Taylor Walton and
Mayor Hugh Hallman at 8:45 a.m. in City Council Chambers, 31 E. Fifth
St., each student will shadow a City of Tempe official for the morning.
Student Government Day culminates in a mock City Council meeting from
2:15-3:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers. The meeting is run entirely by
students and is open to the public. Students discuss an issue that has
already come before the Mayor and City Council.
